How Does Texas Hold’em Work?

(Newswire.net — April 29, 2020) — Poker is a classic game that comes in many forms, and one of the most popular styles on real money holdem websites is Texas hold’em. Played with a 52-card deck and the same winning hands as traditional poker, this type of poker is unique in its card play.

The Blinds Have It

In Texas hold’em, the game kicks off with the player just clockwise of the dealer posting a “small blind,” which is a forced bet. The player clockwise of the small blind player posts the next forced bet, the “big blind.” All of the players may also have to post a bet into the pot.

Next, each player gets two “hole” cards dealt face down, which only they can see, and the dealer places three community cards face up. Betting goes clockwise around the table, starting with the player who is “under the gun,” or clockwise from the big blind player.

Moving Into the Flop and Turn

Once each player sees their hole cards, they have the option to play their hand or raise the big blind in the “flop” round. Betting continues in the round until all of the active players have put equal bets into the pot.

The dealer places the “turn” card face up once the flop round ends. This is a fourth community card. Another round of betting follows, starting with the active player immediately clockwise from the dealer.

Heading Down the River to the Showdown

The fifth and last community card, the “river,” is now dealt. Betting starts again with the player clockwise of the dealer.

When there’s more than one player still in after the betting in the river round, the last person who placed a raise or bet shows their cards in the “showdown” round. If there were no bets in the river round, the player immediately clockwise of the dealer shows their cards first.

Now, the player who has the best five-card hand will win the pot. Any players with identical winning hands share the pot equally. In Texas hold’em, it’s worth remembering that all suits are equal.

Players can move onto the next game on real money holdem websites after the winning player collects the pot. The new dealer will be the person clockwise to the dealer in the game that just ended.

Texas hold’em is a popular poker game for good reason. With exciting rounds and other changes to traditional poker rules, it’s a game for the ages.
