(Newswire.net — March 29, 2016) — Rowlett, Texas – A demolition team had been dispatched to destroy a house in Rowlett, Texas, using Google Maps to navigate to the house and demolish it. Soon after they realized they destroyed the wrong house, the workers allegedly blamed Google Maps for the error, the Telegraph reported.
Company owner, Billy L. Nabors, told The Telegraph that the company is investigating the situation after workers reported the problem. Allegedly, a worker had sent a snapshot to the shocked homeowner, along with a screenshot showing Google Maps pointing to the wrong property.
After checking the home number, the workers realized not only were they in front of the wrong house, but also in the wrong street, the Telegraph reported.
The workers were additionally fooled by the appearance of the house that looked damaged. According to Lindsay Diaz, the homeowner, her house was damaged by a Boxing Day tornado. She told Kera News that she was waiting for workers to fix the house; however, the wrong crew appeared at her doorstep while she was at work.
“I was driving home from work and I get a call from my neighbour,” Ms Diaz told Kera News. “She’s very frantic, crying and I asked her ‘what’s going on?’ She said, ‘a company came and demolished the house by mistake.’”
“How do you make a mistake like this? I mean, this is just the worst,” she said in an interview.
Ms Diaz said she was not impressed with workers trying to blame Google navigation without checking they are at the right location, in right street, in front of the right house, which was indeed damaged, but structurally sound.
“When a structural engineer came out to see my home, he wrote a report stating that the home was structurally sound,” she said.
“One of the walls needed to be replaced, some of the rafters on the roof needed to be replaced, but the home was structurally sound and did not need to come down,” Ms Diaz added.
In an interview with WFAA she concluded workers did what the tornado couldn’t. “I feel further away from moving into a home today than I did after the tornado hit”, she said.
