New Wireless Technology Could Broadcast Live From Inside Our Body

(Newswire.net — April 17, 2016) — Thanks to a new revolutionary wireless transition technology, a probe equipped with camera and sensitive microphones now can stream and wire signal from within our body, according to NewScientist

Researchers have developed a wireless signal so powerful it could stream a Netflix video through flesh and organs. Light Fidelity, also known as Li-Fi, uses light from light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to deliver communication in a similar manner to Wi-Fi and may make Wi-Fi obsolete. While this new step is still in development, a step beyond it has already been taken. The ultrasonic transmitter can penetrate body tissue and communicate with new generation body implants.

The idea is not new. There are implants in medicine that use radio signals to transmit data.  However, the new wireless technology is able to transmit high definition data, which means doctors in the near future may see detailed video of our blood vessels or intestinal structure.

Current implants use radio waves to transmit data. Radio waves do not travel well through soft tissue so an increase in power would be needed in order to improve the signal, which means dangerously heating up the tissue. The new wireless transmitter does not heat up and can deliver trillions of data in a second, scientists say.

Scientists have successfully tested the theory using slabs of pork and beef submerged in water. The ultrasonic signal passed through the meat at speeds of up to 30 megabits per second, around 1,000 times faster than radio signals in existing implants.

“You could stream Netflix through the pork loin,” said Andrew Singer, researcher at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign.

After laboratory testing, scientist are ready for the next stage – testing the new implants on living tissue.

One of the major contributions of this new technology is the possibility of updating implant software using wi-fi, taking away the need to surgically remove them..
