(Newswire.net — June 8, 2015) Anaheim, CA — The experts at Industrial Plastic Supply, Inc. have now been in the business of supplying clients with plastic for their business and shops for over 40 years. One of the most versatile plastics that they supply is polycarbonate. Polycarbonate’s are popular in the industry due to their extremely high impact strength, yet lightweight properties.

The plastic can easily be formed, bent and worked without losing any of it’s strength. While there are many uses for this ultra-tough material, the professionals at Industrial Plastic Supply have shared some of what they have seen to be the top applications of the plastic in a variety of different industries.

Skylights and Roofing Panels

The plastic is very useful in creating both skylights and roofing panels due to it’s high strength. The panels can be completely transparent so that they transmit all of the sunlight, or can be somewhat glazed so that they transmit light, but not direct sunlight. They are often cheaper than having glass skylights installed and can be a great alternative without much visibility difference. The biggest advantage of polycarbonate skylights over glass is that they are much more impact resistant than glass and will not break when hit by tree branches, balls, or even hail.

Riot Shields and Face Shields

Polycarbonate is often used in police riot shields. The plastic is so strong that it will deflect thrown items and impacts, even from hard objects such as bats or crowbars. Depending on the thickness of the material, polycarbontae riot shields can also be bullett resistant. For the same reasons, many police forces also use polycarbonate in the face shields attached to their riot helmets.

Window Glazing

Window glazing refers to reinforcing glass windows with a layer of polycarbonate. One way that this can be used to prevent burgulary is by coating the inside of windows with a clear sheet in order to make them stronger. The plastic shouldn’t affect vision through the window, but will prevent the windows from being shattered in the event of being hit or kicked, even with excessive force. Polycarbonate is also becoming more and more popular as a material used in the construction of greenhouses. It is said to insulate better than glass, and according to some sources, can actually be a more cost effective option than a glass greenhouse.

There are many more uses and projects for the very versatile plastic, polycarbonate. The leading manufacturer and industry leader is Bayer (yes, the same as the aspirin), as they produce the best clear polycarbonate sheets. Industrial Plastic Supply, Inc. not only carries polycarbonate in Makrolon sheets, but also in tubes, rods and film.
