Ketosis Is the Foundation of Weight Loss Strategies

(Newswire.net — March 12, 2018) Cheyenne, Wyoming — Ketosis sounds like a disease or complicated issue at best, but it’s really quite simple, so simple that it’s the foundation of the trendy keto diet which is essentially a high protein/low carb diet. It’s most commonly used as a weight loss strategy these days, but it’s also a naturally occurring process during periods of fasting.

“Dietary ketosis is among the most misunderstood concepts in nutrition because it is often confused with ketoacidosis, which is a life-threatening condition most often associated with uncontrolled insulin-deficient Type 1 diabetes,” states Lindora Clinic. “In the Type 1 diabetic, the absence of insulin leads to a toxic build-up of blood glucose and an extreme break-down of fat and muscle tissue. This condition doesn’t occur in individuals who have even a small amount of insulin, whether from natural production or from it being artificially administered.”

When the availability of carbohydrates decreases, then the body merely changes fuel much like a hybrid vehicle that can run on both petrol and electricity, two completely different sources that can provide the same needed energy to function safely. As with almost everything, there are extremities to be wary of, the excessive production of ketones can lead to blood poisioning just as if one were to pack up with carbs it would lead to obesity and a host of other issues deriving from such.

“In the event of a low glucose concentration in the blood, most other tissues have alternative fuel sources besides ketone bodies and glucose (such as fatty acids), but the brain has an obligatory requirement for some glucose,” details Wikipedia. “After the diet has been changed to lower blood glucose utilization for 3 days, the brain gets 25% of its energy from ketone bodies. After about 4 days, this goes up to 70% (during the initial stages the brain does not burn ketones, since they are an important substrate for lipid synthesis in the brain). Furthermore, ketones produced from omega-3 fatty acids may reduce cognitive deterioration in old age.”

Interestingly enough, true Inuit Eskimos exist more or less in a perpetual state of ketosis by virtually of the meat rich and spare carb diet available to them throughout the arctic region. This lifestyle has proven the test of time and the unyielding winter elements are a perfect demonstration of just how well the human body can maintain ketosis with no negative effects on health. Hence, it is on this premise that ketosis has been given the clinical nod as a safe method of controlling or enhancing weight, hunger, energy and mood.

“Ketones are organic compounds that are produced by the liver during times of low blood glucose, decreased insulin production, and increased fatty acid oxidation,” explains Chris Irvin, Science Nutritionist. “There are three different molecules that are classified as ketones or ketone bodies: beta-hydroxybutyrate, acetoacetate, and acetone. Acetoacetate and beta-hydroxybutyrate are the primary ketone bodies that are utilized by our metabolic systems. Acetone is rapidly exhaled through the lungs and excreted in the urine. However, acetone can also serve as an alkalizing agent to prevent acidosis from occurring.”

Surprisingly, ketosis even has compounds of ketones designed to minimize the whole process for being excessive and evolving to acidosis. While it’s very easy for diabetics, especially those with type 1, to be quickly pushed into a state of ketoacidsosis, it’s not as easy for those in full normal health. Nonetheless, as a precaution, ketone levels ought to be checked regularly to identify the tipping point, if need be.
