(Newswire.net — March 21, 2018) Las Vegas, Nevada –In a sweeping effort to improve highway safety on roadways, the state of Nevada has passed a number of new laws in the past year. One of those new laws focuses on vehicle liability insurance. As of July 1, 2018, all motorists in the state will be required to purchase higher limits for their vehicle insurance coverage. Attorney Kelly Huang, a prominent personal injury lawyer with a private practice in Las Vegas, applauds the new traffic safety measures. “The state of Nevada has long been associated with high numbers of traffic-related injuries and deaths,” says Mr. Huang, who has practiced in the state for over 20 years. “Raising liability coverages will help protect those involved in serious motor vehicle crashes, and will ultimately improve highway safety in our state.” To learn more about the new law that goes into effect on July 1, visit http://lasvegas.cbslocal.com/2018/03/06/new-law-may-increase-your-car-insurance-by-july/.

Under current Nevada vehicle insurance laws, motorists are required to have a minimum of $15,000 in coverage per person for bodily injury claims, $30,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $10,000 per accident for property damage. This is referred to in the Nevada insurance industry as “15/30/10 coverage”. When the new law goes into effect, motorists will be required to purchase higher coverage limits, obtaining a minimum of $25,000 per person for bodily injury, $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $20,000 in property damage per accident. The new law was developed by state legislatures to improve insurance coverages across the state. The new law is being shared with state residents thanks to a partnership between the Nevada Division of Insurance, the Nevada Highway Patrol, Nevada Insurance Council, and the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles.

The Division of Insurance has already received filings from insurance companies doing business in Nevada, and has approved many of them to reflect the upcoming law. Some insurance companies have already begun to implement the higher coverage limits for their policyholders, particularly in policy renewals or new insurance policy purchases. It is important to note that failure to obtain higher per-person and per-accident liability limits may result in significant penalties on the part of motorists operating vehicles in Nevada.

Kelly Huang, who has practiced personal injury law in Nevada for two decades, is no stranger to traffic safety initiatives. He recently spoke out on the state’s passage of ignition interlock legislation to combat drunk driving. New laws designed to improve teen driver safety were also passed by the state legislature, including new regulations governing the issuance of driver’s licenses for new drivers. These efforts have improved the state’s ratings in the Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety’s “Roadmap of State Highway Safety Laws”, moving up to a “yellow light” from its previous “red light” status.
