(Newswire.net — April 21, 2018) Orlando, FL — Schizophrenia is one of the most serious psychological conditions that impacts many people today. There are pharmaceutical drugs formulated for this condition. However, there are also natural alternatives believed to help sufferers.

New research finds that fish oil may be potentially helpful in fighting schizophrenia. Fish oil contains omega-3 fatty acids, which are healthy fats essential for brain and body functions. Omega-3s are widely believed to be extremely therapeutic.

“Today, more and more people are using fish oil supplements to take advantage of the potential benefits of omega-3 fats,” said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O’Sullivan.

DHA, which is a common form of omega-3 fat, makes up around 15-34% of the brain’s cerebral cortex. This however depends on the person’s age. The older people are, the more DHA they have.

According to experts, the neurons, which are the cells of the central nervous system, contain high levels of DHA, which provide structural support. Since the brain is built from omega-3s, it makes a lot of sense that it plays a significant role in brain function.

Omega-3 fats are also believed to offer antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. These properties have the potential to offer some positive effects on mental health.

Harvard psychiatrist Dr. Andrew Stoll published a study in 1999. The study indicated that omega-3s have successfully helped enhance the course of illness in individuals with bipolar disorder.

In 2001, Stoll published the book called “The Omega-3 Connection”, which was one of the first publications that featured the role omega-3 fats play against depression.

In 2010, the Orygen Youth Health Research Center researchers revealed that supplementation of animal-based omega-3 fats for 12 weeks has helped reduce psychosis risk. The research involved high-risk individuals, and they experienced risk reduction for more than one year.

The journal “Nature Communications” published new research that reveals omega-3s may have the ability to delay psychosis progression among high-risk individuals. The delay even lasted for a minimum of seven years.

It was also found that only 10% of those who took omega-3 supplements have transitioned to psychosis within the study period. On the other hand, 40% of those who did not take omega-3s succumbed to the psychological condition.

Those who want to take advantage of the potentially therapeutic effects of omega-3s may consume fish such as salmon, tuna, herring and sardines. There are also fish oil supplements that are believed to have high concentrations of omega-3 fats. Fish oil supplements are also thought to have low levels of environmental pollutants.
