(Newswire.net — May 3, 2018) Orlando, FL — More and more health experts consider the increasing prevalence of depression extremely alarming. While there are medications available, it appears that they do not provide an absolute solution for this brain disorder.

Scientists discovered that depression may be remedied through the use of nutrients like folic acid.

According to experts, this B vitamin is needed for a variety of metabolic functions inside the body. It may be obtained from consumption of turnip greens, spinach, asparagus, grape fruit, strawberries, Brussel sprouts, beets, cauliflower and carrots.

This B vitamin is essential for health due to the role it plays inside the body. It is required in the process of synthesizing, utilizing and repairing DNA.

When deficiency of this vitamin occurs, it leads to reduced energy, irritability, anemia, pale skin, canker sores and digestive issues.

In numerous scientific studies, it was found that depression is linked with folate deficiency. What makes it more interesting is that folate deficiency in individuals suffering from depression can decrease the effectiveness of antidepressant drugs.

Scientists speculate that this may be due to the role that this vitamin plays in transmethylation reactions.

According to researchers, a transmethylation reaction pertains to the movement of a methyl group from one compound to another. These methyl transfers are needed for the formation of some neurotransmitters.

Some studies also reveal that there is a genetic variant of an enzyme that decreases the ability of the body to make the folic acid to L-methylfolate conversion. This has been found to be common in individuals with depression.

The American Journal of Psychiatry reveals that patients of major depressive disorders had less response to drug therapy. These participants had lower levels of folate.

Another study was conducted and published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology. It was found that sufferers of major depression were low in folate and vitamin B12.

The researchers further found that those with diets high in folate were less susceptible to depressive disorders and some other mood disorders. They suggest that there was significant evidence that increasing consumption of folate aids in reducing the likelihood of depression.

Aside from fighting depression, it is worth mentioning that the use of folate is linked with a myriad of therapeutic effects. Today, folate, along with other B vitamins, can be consumed easily and efficiently through supplementation.
