(Newswire.net — October 2, 2018) Orlando, FL — Today, more and more people are sitting all day playing video games. While this is engaged in as a past time, it ends up being unhealthy, experts say.

According to experts, the hallmark of any addition is the loss of control of the life of a person over the substance being used or behavior.

The World Health Organization has said that indeed players can be addicted to playing video games.

It, as a matter of fact, added “Gaming Disorder” to the 11th edition of its International Classification of Diseases, known as ICD-11. This is a guide that informs health care diagnoses, treatment decisions and insurance coverage.

Healthcare providers diagnose a gaming disorder according to a behavior that produces significant impairment in social, educational, personal, family, occupational or other essential areas of functioning.

Nancy Petry is a specialist in substance abuse and behavioral addictions. She is a professor of medicine at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and editor of the journal Psychology of Addictive Behaviors.

She worked on the U.S. equivalent of the ICD, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, or DSM.

The American Psychiatric Association published the most recent version called the DSM-5.

It has been found that people do suffer from significant problems linked to gaming. These individuals tend to be male and young, but adults are also included as well.

It is important to remember that a gaming disorder can produce some significant harm to the lives of people. Experts say that the one sensationalized the most is a scenario where they kill their parents when they are being stopped from playing.

There are also other common problems like poor sleep habits, social isolation, dropping out of school entirely, and a decline in school grades.

Scientists have also found a potential overlap with attention deficit disorder (ADD). A majority of these kids involved in the treatment study have ADD. Some have also suffered from depression.

It is important to take care of mental health, and protect it. Aside from reducing the frequency of playing games, it is wise to nourish the brain with nutrients. There are brain-health protecting nutrients that could aid in potentially fighting mental health disorders.
