The 2018 Fall Allergy Report from the Asthma and Allergy Foundation lists the 100 worst cities in America for fall pollen, dust and mold allergens. There are three Texas cities in the top 15 this year:

McAllen, Texas (ranked number three in 2016) took the number one spot with a higher than average pollen count and a high allergy medication usage by patients. San Antonio leapt from 16 to 4 on the list this year with a high pollen count, but only an average use of medications. The third Texas city in the top 15 is El Paso, which was at 49 in 2016. The pollen count for El Paso is higher than average and they have a high use of medications there too.

And there are three more Texas cities on the top 100 list: Dallas is number 25, Austin is 42 and Houston 51. So what is it about Texas that puts so many cities on the Worst 100 list?

According to researchers, it’s a combination of weather patterns, local ragweed and the fact that there are only occasional periods of freeze, if any. So the plants can pollinate year-round – even in winter.

About 8 percent of US adults suffer from hay fever, also known as allergic rhinitis, brought on by pollen allergies. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation report, the three top Texas cities on the list have a higher than average use of medications to treat allergies.

Taking antihistamine medication after the body’s immune system produces a reaction to an allergen like pollen, mold or dust, is a reactive way to treat the problem. And many allergy medications have unwanted side effects.

There is some good news for Texas allergy sufferers – a new product on the market assists the immune system to deal with the allergens and not produce histamines.

Histamine Shield Plus is a formulation of natural ingredients created by researchers at WellSource Nutraceuticals, a startup located in Purdue Research Park of Northwest Indiana.  The all-natural supplement boosts the body’s natural immune responses acting as a shield against potential allergens.

“Histamine Shield Plus alleviates concerns about over-the-counter antihistamine side-effects. If taken properly, users may not have to take, or can reduce taking, decongestants or antihistamines,” said WellSource Nutraceuticals founder, Brett Dines.
