Kenjutsu Techniques

Five Postures For Sword Fighting

There are five basic postures to operate kenjutsu. These postures include holding the sword over the head, holding it on the side, holding in the middle, downward pointing sword and horizontal sword. In order to allow the swordsman to be used to any condition in a battle these five postures are combined together in a series of motions. The training and practice of kenjutsu is based on these five postures. The repetitive use of these techniques can help in improving your motor learning and muscle memory.

Strike Quickly

A number of quick strikes are involved in kenjutsu in which on hand of the participant remains on the round knob of the sword handle and the other on its blade’s ridge. Some of the variations of this posture allow the fighter to use the sword for striking against the speed of arrows. These strikes can be used even in the beginning of the fight as no specific trick if used in it. According to experts, these strikes are aimed mainly on the collar, groin, neck and wrist.

Advance Thrust

One of the main techniques of fighting in kenjutsu is thrust of sword. This technique of wrongly timed strike is used initially to give a temptation to the rival. It can be completed in a tricky manner. You can draw in the opponent with your fake strike and aim on his chest or face to perform forward thrust by holding the sword with both the hands.

Cleaning Blade Before Putting Into Sheath

Swinging fast the katana in a circular motion over your head or flicking the blade quickly on the wrist should be done before sheathing its blade. You should slide the sword across the opening of the sheath after circling it in front of you. You should hold the sheath with your right hand and move it over the blade with your left hand to let both the arms meet in the middle. You have to follow many techniques and rituals for proper handling of sword in kenjutsu. These techniques are rarely followed by the modern practitioners of kenjutsu.

Technique of Double Sword

Miyamoto Musashi, a popular swordsman, has popularized the technique of two swords in kenjutsu used by many modern practitioners. The defensive and offensive capabilities of the swordsman become double by holding a sword in each hand. But one has to follow intensive training for using this technique. One sword stops the strike of the opponent whereas cutting and thrusting with the other sword simultaneously.

Most modern kenjutsu programs still practice these kenjutsu techniques to be perfect in this martial art. In order to successfully practice kenjutsu, one must have great patience and drive to thoroughly practice.
