(Newswire.net — January 25, 2019) Orlando, FL — There are medical conditions that affect millions of people nowadays. There are those that only affect adults and there are also conditions that start or happen during childhood.

Neurologists reveal that fish oil may be potentially beneficial for apraxia sufferers. This condition is also known as the brain and nervous system disorder. Children who suffer from it typically encounter difficulties in performing movements and tasks.

This condition can affect the limbs and face as well as complex learned behaviors such as talking, getting dressed, or using silverware. It is believed that fish oil may have the potential to improve the long-term outcome of particular types of speech apraxia and childhood movement.

Otherwise known as the childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), this developmental disorder affects a person’s ability to utter or produce syllables, words, and sounds. It can also be called dyspraxia when it affects fine motor behavior.

According to the Lipids in Health and Nutrition, 60% of the brain is comprised of lipids, and these are made of fatty acids. There are various childhood developmental and neurological conditions that have been associated with long-chain polyunsaturated acid deficiencies.

When there are problems in processing fatty acids, it may negatively impact neurological and behavioral functioning. There are conditions linked with the deficiencies in processing fatty acids and other nutrients such as dyslexia, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, dyspraxia, apraxia, and autism.

Claudia Morris from the Children’s Hospital & Research Center reveals that there have been a growing number of studies that demonstrate that fatty acids supplementation may be helpful in children with such a condition.

In the study conducted by Morris and published in Alternative Therapies, 187 children participants with speech apraxia were given vitamin E and fatty acid supplements containing DHA and EPA. DHA and EPA are believed to be powerful omega-3 fats contained in fish oil.

According to Morris, neurological abnormalities may be caused by malabsorption of vitamin E. This is believed to happen when the neural environment is created within cell membranes, which may make the long-chain fatty acids vulnerable to free radicals.

Children with speech apraxia are known to have food allergies and fat malabsorption. After the study it was found that the children given vitamin E as well as DHA and EPA achieved dramatic improvements in eye contact, coordination, imitation, speech, GERD symptoms, and development of pain sensation.

Omega-3 fatty acids such as DHA and EPA may be consumed through eating fish such as tuna and salmon. However, there are also other options such as fish oil supplementation. Fish oil supplements are thought to contain high levels of omega-3 fats.
