Research Suggests Walking a No-Brainer for Brain Health Improvement

A group of researchers conducted a new study involving participants who were 60 years old and older. The subjects were divided into two walking activity groups.

The low physical activity group walked 4,000 steps each day or fewer. The high activity group, on the other hand, walked over 4,000 steps a day.

It is worth mentioning that in an average pace, 4,000 steps may roughly equate to two miles. The researchers also tracked the physical activity of both groups and verified it through the use of accelerometers for seven days.

Scientists found that subjects who were able to walk about two miles every day were able to preserve the cognitive function of their aging brains.

In this study, the investigators used MRI scans to evaluate the thickness as well as the volume of the hippocampus of their brains. The hippocampus is the seat of memory in the brain.

In previous research, it was found that greater thickness of the hippocampus is linked with more effective memory consolidation. This pertains to a process by which humans form and hold onto memories over time.

According to Prabha Siddarth, lead researcher, brain thickness, a more sensitive measure than volume, can track subtle changes in the brain earlier than volume and can independently predict cognition.

Siddarth is from the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at the University of California, Los Angeles.

The scientists found that participants who were able to walk over 4,000 steps on a daily basis had thicker hippocampal volume than the subjects who walked less.
