(Newswire.net — September 17, 2019) Bend, OR — The Center Orthopedic & Neurosurgical Care, Central Oregon’s largest independent multispecialty group specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries and conditions, announces the implementation of an application programming interface (API) for exchanging electronic health records. For patients, the benefit of electronic health records means they can use one website or app to manage all of their healthcare information from multiple physicians, clinics or hospitals.
Interoperability in healthcare has been at the forefront of healthcare information technology and analytics for many years. Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR, pronounced “fire”) was introduced in 2011 to standardize the exchange of healthcare information. Since it was introduced, FHIR has gone through several versions to become the standard framework for sharing data.
“The Center supports the open exchange of information and patient empowerment,” stated Mike Gonsalves, CEO of The Center. “Information sharing in healthcare greatly benefits both patients and providers. In the foreseeable future, this data will drive improved care and outcomes.”
The Center began sharing healthcare information data from Allscripts, their Electronic Health Record (EHR), on September 1, 2019. Allscripts supports FHIR and there are currently two patient engagement applications available for patients, MyLinks and Medlio. A patient engagement application is any application that patients can access on their mobile device, tablet, or computer that can be tethered to the patient’s electronic medical record (EMR).
To utilize patient engagement applications, patients first need to establish an account with The Center using the FollowMyHealth patient portal provided by Allscripts. A patient’s identity must be authenticated before access is allowed for security. Once the FollowMyHealth account is enabled, the applications can be set up using the secure logins from the patient’s account.
