(Newswire.net — October 5, 2019) — Charlotte, N.C (AP) – Megan Rapinoe made two assists in her first national team game since the World Cup and the United States beat South Korea 2–0 on Thursday night for the 17th straight win.

Coach Jill Ellis earned his 106th win as coach of the United States, passing Tony DiCicco for the most wins with the team.
“It’s not what I do for it, but I’ll take it,” said Ellis, who has backed the American team back-to-back for the World Cup title. “As I’ve said many times, a lot of people have shoulders at this point. But that’s great. Celebrate this team.”
Ellie Long and Mallory Pugh each scored in the team’s fifth straight shutout.
Rapinoe, who was ruled out due to an Achilles injury since the United States won the World Cup in France, served a free-kick, which remained long enough to score in the first-half stoppage time. It was Long’s eighth career goal.
Regarding his partner with NWSL’s reign, Long said, “He hit it all over and I was right once in it.”
Pugh added a goal on the header in the 76th minute. It was his 18th career goal, with an assist before Rapinoe was ejected a minute later.
Seven US players were unavailable for the game due to injury, including Sam Mewis, Kelly O’Hara, Morgan Bryan, Ali Krieger, Alex Morgan, Tobin Heath, and Lindsey Horan.
Prior to the game, the team honored Krieger for 100 appearances with the team. She reached the milestone against New Zealand on 16 May but the World Cup event was delayed.
The moment was particularly touching because Krieger’s father, Ken Krieger, was able to attend. Ken Cregar was recently in a serious car accident and spent more than a week in intensive care. As well as celebrating at a pregame ceremony, American golfer Ashlyn Harris was Ali Krager’s fiance. Harris also started the game.
South Korea played in the World Cup this summer but lost in each of their three group stage games.
The game was the second-to-last tour of the American team’s World Cup victory. The US will host South Korea again on Sunday at Soldier Field in Chicago.
The match in Chicago will be Coach Ellis’s last with the team. The two-time world coach is stepping up.
“For him to go out on top, to be the most winning coach in American football history, two back-to-back World Cups, it’s absolutely incredible,” Long said. “As a woman, she has been a role model for many of us, and like a second mom, you are so much with this team.”
The DiCicco family released a statement congratulating Ellis after the game. DiCicco, who coached the team from 1994–99, died in 2017.

The United States is 18-1-2 this season. The lone loss in the first game of the year came in France.
