(Newswire.net — October 29, 2019) Scottsdale, AZ — The production of sustainable aviation fuels is a key focus area for many today, and the association, Alternative Fuels and Chemicals Coalition (AFCC) is working to make that a reality sooner than many imagined. The power behind any coalition, though, lies in its experts and board members, and the group just extended that power by inviting Northwest Advanced Bio-Fuels’ Manager David P. Smoot to join the board.

The Need for Sustainable Aviation Fuel

The aviation industry, based on a good economy, is only going to see continued passenger growth, and the carbon footprint per ticketed passenger will see an uptick with that growth. As a result, groups like the AFCC are vital, as they work to not only find better production methods for creating sustainable renewable aviation fuel but also to educate the public on what comprises an alternative and sustainable fuel and just how important the field of biotechnology is in the sustainable fuel equation.

“The AFCC was created to address the gaping holes in renewable chemicals, renewable products, and sustainable aviation fuel public policy and to help develop regulatory and legislative solutions to the issues that may arise around that market,” said executive staff member Dr. Rina Singh. “Dave Smoot’s expertise and extensive experience in the alternative fuel and energy sector plays a big role in the AFCC’s decision to invite Mr. Smoot to join the board. He brings both the upstream side of things as a producer of bio-fuels and the downstream side as an expert in woody biomass to the group. His company represents the full value chain, and we need that level of expertise on our board.”

A Long Commitment to Alternative Energy

This is far from David Smoot’s first work with alternative energy. Smoot first began working with wind and solar energy in California more than a decade ago. He represented a wind turbine originally created by Korean conglomerate Daewoo; their revolutionary Vertical Axis Wind Turbine. His work with woody biomass feedstock as an energy source began a few years later in Arizona when he started a project that worked on the pyrolytic gasification of woody biomass from landfills to make electricity. It was there that he began learning exactly how powerful cellulosic woody biomass was in being used as an alternative feedstock could be in terms of an alternative energy source. It was there that the seeds necessary to eventually develop Northwest Advanced Bio-Fuels really began growing.

“NWABF is creating a bio-based economic model, and the AFCC is committed to that idea. I plan to work closely and in partnership with the AFCC on environmental and sustainability issues, to help identify and implement ways to positively impact our planet,” Smoot said.

The first governing board meeting of the AFCC will be held December 10, 2019, at Kilpatrick, Townsend & Stockton in Washington D.C.
