A New Study Suggests Noisy Knees May Predict Osteoarthritis Development

(Newswire.net — March 25, 2020) Orlando, FL — Health authorities warn that osteoarthritis is the single most common cause of disability in older adults.

This long-term chronic disease remains highly prevalent today, despite the multiple research studies carried out by scientists to find its cure.

It is characterized by the deterioration of the joint cartilage. Such a damage leads the bones to rub with each other, and this leads in OA symptoms like pain, stiffness, and physical limitations.

The United Nations warn that by 2050, individuals over the age of 60 will account for over 20 percent of the global population. This, in terms of OA prevalence, is alarming considering that there is an estimated 10 percent to 15 percent of all adults 60 years old and above who have some degree of osteoarthritis.

In a new research, which utilized data from the Osteoarthritis Initiative, it has been found that individuals who hear grating, cracking, or popping sounds in or around their knee joint may be at a heightened odds of developing knee osteoarthritis.

It is worth mentioning that the Osteoarthritis Initiative is a multi-center observational study of nearly 3500 participants.

The researchers reveal that the subjects of this research were individuals who were at an increased risk of knee OA.

Among those who developed it within a year, over 75 percent exhibited signs of OA on radiographic images but no frequent knee pain at the beginning of the study.

The study results may be useful in identifying people at risk of knee OA, and this can potentially assist earlier diagnosis and intervention.

According to Dr. Grace Lo, many people who have signs of osteoarthritis on x-rays do not necessarily complain of pain, and there are no known strategies for preventing the development of pain in this group of people.

Grace Lo is lead author of the Arthritis Care & Research study and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

Knee osteoarthritis can be difficult to deal with, and this is why sufferers turn to the use of medications like NSAIDs. However, since the use of these pharmaceutical drugs is associated with side effects, more and more OA sufferers are looking for safer alternatives.

One of these safer alternatives is glucosamine, which is an all-natural compound that is a popular subject of research today.

Glucosamine is found to be useful in repairing the joint cartilage and it even aids in enhancing mobility in individuals suffering from physical limitations due to the condition.

It can be obtained through the use of VitaBreeze Glucosamine, which is also equipped with other OA-fighting ingredients like turmeric, chondroitin, and MSM (www.amazon.com/Glucosamine-Chondroitin-Turmeric-Dietary-Supplement/dp/B00DUMO9X4).
