(Newswire.net — March 30, 2020) Orlando, FL — B vitamin like folic acid have long been reputed to work wonders in delivering a myriad of health benefits. Today, this nutrient is widely studied due to its remarkable disease-fighting effects.

Scientists carried out a study and it was spearheaded by Rebecca J. Schmidt, assistant professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences.

In this research, researchers at UC Davis and other institutions have revealed that moms who consumed recommended amounts of folic acid around conception might decrease the risk of pesticide-related autism in their children.

The study involved intake of 800 or more micrograms of folic acid, which is the amount in a majority of prenatal vitamins. It has been found these children had a significantly reduced risk of suffering from autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

This stayed true despite the mothers being exposed to household or agricultural pesticides associated with increased risk.

“We found that if the mom was taking folic acid during the window around conception, the risk associated with pesticides seemed to be attenuated,” said Schmidt.

The study utilized data from the Childhood Autism Risks from Genetics and the Environment (CHARGE) study.

It is further worth mentioning that the research team also linked data from California Pesticide Use reports, which provide essential details about agricultural spraying, with the mothers’ addresses.

Experts have long stressed the dangers of being exposed to pesticides, especially to unborn children.

In addition to reducing exposure to these toxins, it is also wise to nourish the body with the nutrients it needs to increase its protection from environmental threats.

Experts have long been stressing the relevance of B vitamins like folic acid in terms of decreasing the odds of autism. Various studies involving the use of prenatal supplements of folic acid have shown it counteracted the risk of autism.

It is worth mentioning such risk was linked with in utero exposure to epilepsy drugs or toxic chemicals. Scientists have also long been reiterating that B vitamins like folic acid may work in preventing birth defects.

Researchers carried out another study involving individuals with autism. It has been found autism sufferers and their immediate family members are more likely to carry immune molecules that could block folate’s passage into the brain than the controls.

Aside from folic acid, there are other B vitamins found to be particularly helpful in fighting autism and some other conditions. A growing body of evidence even suggests that increased B vitamin intake can enhance protection against a range of diseases.
