What Kind of Vinyl Records Are Worth Money?

(Newswire.net — June 29, 2020) — Collecting vinyl records is a fun hobby that offers many more hands-on pleasures than, for example, stamp collecting. While stamps lose their value, the second you adhere to them to the letter. Vinyl records, when taken care of, can retain most if not all of their value, even after they are played. Most people who collect vinyl records aren’t in it to make a buck. Collectors are music-lovers who want to hear every sound and note in a way that is hard to replicate through other means. Vinyl records offer such a high-quality sound that many have compared the experience to a live concert. The fact is, though, that some vinyl records can make you money. You may even have a few records sitting in your collection that are worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars. If you are wondering what kind of vinyl records are worth money, here is some information on a few of the albums you might want to keep an eye on!

The Freewheelin Bob Dylan

The Freewheelin Bob Dylan is the musician’s second album; it came out in 1963. While Dylan is a versatile artist who has evolved and changed over the decades, he mainly started as a folk musician. Almost all of Dylan’s early songs were heavily influenced by folk music and featured an acoustic guitar. This was okay for Dylan because he was such a good writer that even old-timey folk tunes became new when coupled with his lyrics. But as the time changed, so too made Dylan’s music, and by the time his second album came out, Dylan was inching closer to rock n’ roll. Still, though, his lyrics were poetic, and he had only minimal use of the electric guitar.

Aside from being a great album, the reason The Freewheelin Bob Dylan is so expensive has to do with a manufacturing mistake. Apparently, there were four songs that were supposed to be added to the album somewhat last minute. These new songs would replace four other songs that Dylan wanted to be removed. The new songs were sent off to where the records where being printed, but apparently there was a mistake. A few hundred copies of the old version of the record were printed before the mistake was caught, and, finally, the new songs were added.

The rare “mistake” version of the vinyl record is very valuable and can fetch up to $35,000.

The White Album

A little-known fact about The White Album is that it’s actually a misnomer. The White Album is not actually the name of the famous record by The Beatles. What is the record’s name? The Beatles. Yes, that’s right. The Beatles named their album The Beatles. You can see why people were happy to avoid the confusion and simply call the album by its appearance, which was, of course, all white.

Anyway, if you have The White Album and it has a low serial number, you may be sitting on tens of thousands of dollars.

Diamond Dogs

Diamond Dogs by David Bowie has a really interesting bit of cover art where Bowie is the top half, and a dog is a bottom half. In the original artwork, the dog’s “privates” where showing. This bothered executives, and it was eventually ordered that the area be airbrushed—but not until a few copies made their way out. These copies are now worth nearly $10,000, and the price is only rising with time!

There you have it, three of the biggest vinyl records of all time. While you should collect vinyl for the pleasure of the sound, it’s still pretty cool if you have one of the expensive vinyl records included on this list.
