The world has changed, your friends have moved on, but you long for faded glory and cling to regrets. We all feel like this occasionally. Everyone comes to a point where they discover what they were doing just isn’t working anymore. Today we are faced with chronic uncertainty and changing realities. But successful people know who they are and what they want to achieve. Fruitful existence requires roots. Here are a few suggestions on becoming grounded.

  1. Set goals: Part of the reason people never seem to get where they want to be, is that they have failed to identify where that it is exactly. You might have an idea where you want to be 30 years from now, but how about at the end of the month, or next year. Do you know the path you will have to take to reach your dream? Make a list of short, medium, and long-term goals and keep it on your phone or desktop. It is okay to modify your plan as life keeps coming at you, but ultimately, it’s up to you to keep pushing towards each new level with consistent determination.

  1. Change your hairstyle: Cutting hair to signify an oath or commitment is an ancient practice. It is an outward declaration of your commitment to change. But don’t just get a trim, get a whole new style. Hire a hair specialist to design a perfect style to match the real you; the person you aspire to be, and the beauty you want the world to see.

  1. Establish your worldview: Know yourself. This sounds deep, but establishing a philosophy that rings true in your spirit is an essential foundation from which to grow. Random, shifting values will only keep you in fear of having an opinion and making a stand. Take a step back, analyse your core truths, then support the things that build upon that foundation.

  1. Be honest with yourself: The biggest lies we tell are those we say to ourselves. Own your actions and be positive without being delusional. Become someone you can trust. Your mental state can have significant effects on your physical health.

  1. Be a peacemaker: Our world is addicted to outrage and there is so much fuel on the fire. The best way to keep your focus in turbulent times is with words that heal. Limit your intake of all media. Talk to people face to face and speak hope into every situation.

To paraphrase a quote from Rudyard Kipling If you can keep your head when everyone around you is losing theirs, then you can have a positive influence. You don’t have to live your life like a candle in the wind (sorry Elton). It is better to be a symbol of confidence and strength. But first you need to know what you want, set some goals, examine your truths and be determined to keep your peace. Establishing some hard boundaries for your core identity will give you a foundation for mental wellness and satisfaction with who you are.
