Macbeth – The Plot

The Characters

In Macbeth, there are 5 main characters:

The Plot 

It all starts after a battle in Ireland, Macbeth and Banquo move to their military camp. 3 witches appear – they are able to see the future! They predict that Macbeth will be the future King of Scotland! For Banquo, they predict that he would beget a line of Scottish kings. Both are hesitant about these predictions. King Duncan – who is King of Scotland – and his men thank Macbeth and Banquo for their victories. As a reward, Macbeth has been named Thane of Cawdor. With this title, Macbeth knows he will be the future king – as the witches have predicted this. Macbeth tells his wife, who is greedy for this position and power, Lady Macbeth is determined to see her husband crowned king!

Lady Macbeth persuades Macbeth to kill the king and he agrees. They plan to knock out the king’s servants by getting them drunk and kill the King and make it look like the servants did it. Macbeth stabs the King in his sleep. The next morning, when the people discover the king is dead and assumed that the servants killed him, Macbeth kills the servants as well.

Malcolm and Donalbain, the sons of the king, are devasted by the news and claim their father’s killer must die. Yet, after the murder of the King, Macbeth becomes restless as according to the witches, it’s Banquo heirs that would sit on the throne. At a royal feast, Macbeth kills Banquo and Fleance his son. Yet, Fleance manages to flee. Macbeth is angry as Banquo’s son is still alive. At the feast, many Scottish nobles are present, Macbeth sees Banquo’s ghost, he becomes stressed and terrified. However, Lady Macbeth manages to control the situation during the royal feast. 

Traumatized by what he saw, Macbeth goes to the witches and they tell him that only a man born of a woman can kill him. He feels safe as he knows that all men are born from a woman. He gets the news that Macduff, the Thane of Fife, has escaped to England to meet the son of Duncan, Malcolm. Macbeth then orders to take the castle of Macduff and kill his wife and children. 

Macduff gets the news about his family in England and wants revenge. Macduff and Malcolm raise an army to stop Macbeth. Lady Macbeth on the other hand commits suicide as she was having visions such as seeing bloodstains on her hands. She can’t bear all this trauma and started sleepwalking. Macbeth realises that he has read all the visions wrong – Macbeth knows he is doomed. Macduff beheads Macbeth. Malcolm becomes King of Scotland!
