One in 3 Young Adult Americans Does Not Know The Common Stroke Symptoms

(Newswire.net — June 2, 2021) Orlando, FL — In the United States, almost one in three young adults is unaware of what the common stroke symptoms are.

At a time when stroke is on the rise among young adults, almost 30 percent of Americans younger than 45 years reported not knowing all five of the most common stroke symptoms.

This is according to a research study published in Stroke, a journal of the American Stroke Association, a division of the American Heart Association.

Still in the U.S., stroke is found to be the number 5 cause of mortality as well as the leading cause of disability. Every single year, 10 percent to 15 percent of the nearly 795,000 people in the U.S. who have a stroke are young adults — between ages 18 and 45.

In recent studies, it has been shown that there is a decline in stroke incidence in the general population. However, it is important to keep in mind that there was an increase in stroke incidence and hospitalizations by over 40 percent in young adults in the past several decades.

“While the medical community has made significant improvements to reduce the severity and complications of strokes with early interventions, these efforts are of limited value if patients do not recognize stroke symptoms,” said study author Khurram Nasir, M.D., M.P.H., M.Sc.,

Nasir is chief of the division of cardiovascular prevention and wellness at Houston Methodist DeBakey Heart and Vascular Center in Houston, Texas.

Some nutrients like B vitamins are found particularly helpful in fighting stroke.

The need to maintain adequate levels of nutrients continues to be a priority, experts say. This is due to the fact that vitamins and minerals are essential for disease protection and health maintenance. B vitamins can be obtained from consuming chickpeas, potatoes, fish, bananas, and poultry.

It is important to be warned against the symptoms of B vitamin deficiencies, such as a weakened immune system, depression, confusion, dementia, mood disturbances, or poor memory.

In a number of research studies, scientists reveal that intake of B vitamins aided in lessening the odds of stroke.

A study was carried out and published in the online issue of Neurology, which is the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

“Previous studies have conflicting findings regarding the use of vitamin B supplements and stroke or heart attack,” said author Xu Yuming, with Zhengzhou University in Zhengzhou, China.

“Some studies have even suggested that the supplements may increase the risk of these events,” Yuming added.

This study looked into 14 randomized clinical trials with a total of 54,913 participants. By seven percent, it has been found intake of B vitamins lessened the odds of stroke.

Formulas like Divine Bounty B Vitamin Complex may be an excellent source of these nutrients. It contains Choline, Pantothenic acid, Biotin, Vitamin B12, Folic Acid, Niacin, Riboflavin, Thiamin, and vitamin B6.
