Research Warns Against Link Between the Western Diet and Gut Inflammation

(Newswire.net — August 4, 2021) Orlando, FL — Mounting evidence highlights the association of poor food choices and negative health outcomes. It is worth keeping in mind that the eating pattern in the West has been correlated with the increased odds of certain diseases.

A study was carried out and published in Cell Host & Microbe.

It was carried out by the researchers from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and Cleveland Clinic.

In this study, it has been found that the Western diet causes impairment of the immune system in the gut. The investigators further warn that this increases the odds of infection as well as inflammatory bowel disease.

The study involved mice and people, and it has particularly revealed that a diet loaded with sugar and fat produces damage to Paneth cells, which are immune cells in the gut that help keep inflammation in check.

The risk of inflammation in the gut immune system increases when the Paneth cells are not properly functioning. When there is inflammation, it results in the heightened odds of inflammatory bowel disease and undermines effective control of disease-causing microbes.

The findings may pave the way to new approaches to regulating gut immunity by regaining normal Paneth cell function.

According to lead author Ta-Chiang Liu, MD, Ph.D., inflammatory bowel disease has historically been a problem primarily in Western countries such as the U.S., but it’s becoming more common globally as more and more people adopt Western lifestyles.

Liu is an associate professor of pathology & immunology at Washington University.

“Our research showed that long-term consumption of a Western-style diet high in fat and sugar impairs the function of immune cells in the gut in ways that could promote inflammatory bowel disease or increase the risk of intestinal infections.”

Liu worked with the senior author Thaddeus Stappenbeck, MD, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Inflammation and Immunity at Cleveland Clinic.

More and more studies are looking into the various aspects of gut health. It is worth keeping in mind that some nutrients like B vitamins are found particularly beneficial for the gut.

Over the years, researchers have been looking into the impacts of B vitamin intake on the various aspects of health. It is worth keeping in mind that certain B vitamins are found to have disease-fighting benefits.

Extra-strength supplements like Divine Bounty B Vitamin Complex are widely resorted to nowadays. This formula is popularized by its high potency and it continues to be thought of as one of the best sources of B vitamins.
