(Newswire.net — August 9, 2021) Orlando, FL — One of the biggest truths about the Covid-19 pandemic is that it doesn’t just claim an increasing number of lives every day, but also affects mental health.

There have actually been many studies suggesting that it has increased the prevalence of anxiety and depression.

One of these studies was carried out by the researchers from Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health.

In this research, it has been found that during the Covid-19 pandemic, there is a high prevalence rate of both depression and anxiety globally. Further, this study has shown that manner implementation of mitigation strategies, such as public transportation and school closures, and stay-at-home orders affected such disorders.

The findings of this interesting research were published in Psychological Medicine.

“Our research found an elevated global prevalence of these mental health issues during COVID-19 and also revealed there was a wide variance in each at the region- and country-level,” said, João Castaldelli-Maia, MD, Ph.D.

Castaldelli-Maia is a NIDA-INVEST Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Epidemiology and lead author.

Asia has been found to have lower levels of anxiety and depression compared to other regions of the world. The researchers also revealed that the closure of public transportation has increased anxiety levels, especially in Europe.

In the 60 included studies, there were a total of 226,638 people assessed by the researchers. It is important to note that during the pandemic, there is a global prevalence of depression and anxiety by 24 percent and 21 percent respectively.

“Our study confirms how critical it is to investigate levels of mental health disorders and the possible impacts of social distancing measures on mental health outcomes,” said Silvia Martins, MD, Ph.D.

Martins is an associate professor of epidemiology at Columbia Mailman School and senior author.

“Mental health concerns should not be viewed only as a delayed consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic, but also as a concurrent epidemic,” she added.

Today, the scientific community continues to carry out studies looking for some remedies potentially helpful for and protective of mental health. Surprisingly, some nutrients like B vitamins are actually found beneficial.
