Experts Warn Initial UTIs Increase The Risk of Further Infection

(Newswire.net — September 30, 2021) Orlando, FL — Experts warn that more than 60 percent of women will suffer from a urinary tract infection (UTI) in their lifetime. Today, more and more researchers are carrying out studies to look into the various aspects of this infection.

Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis carried out a study.

The findings of this research have shown that an initial infection can actually set the tone for subsequent infections.

Previous mouse studies have actually demonstrated that a transient infection actually triggers a short-lived inflammatory response, which rapidly gets rid of the bacteria. However, in cases when the initial infection lingers for weeks, inflammation also persists.

This actually leads to long-lasting changes to the bladder, which prime the immune system to overreact the next time bacteria reach into the urinary tract, worsening the infection.

The findings of this research were published in eLife.

The results have particularly suggested that reversing these changes to the bladder may actually aid in preventing or mitigating future UTIs.

“Millions of women suffer from recurrent bladder infections, and it can really take a toll on their quality of life,” said co-senior author Thomas J. Hannan, DVM, Ph.D., an instructor in pathology and immunology.

“In the process of fighting these infections, the immune system sometimes does more harm to the bladder than to the bacteria. If we could fine-tune the immune response to keep the body focused on eliminating infecting bacteria, we might be able to reduce the severity of these infections.”

This research was carried out by Hannan and co-senior author Scott J. Hultgren, Ph.D., the Helen L. Stoever Professor of Molecular Microbiology along with co-first authors Lu Yu, Ph.D., and Valerie O’Brien, Ph.D.

Urinary tract infections continue to affect more and more people today. It is worth keeping in mind that while this type of infection can be treated with antibiotics, it can recur. Experts also warn against the excessive use or misuse of this medication due to the antimicrobial resistance it produces.

The good news is that certain remedies have been found particularly helpful in fighting this infection. These include the use of D-mannose, which is a therapeutic sugar that can be found in cranberry juice.

D-mannose has been found to work by binding with E.coli and eliminating the bacteria out of the body. Today, formulas like Divine Bounty D-mannose are widely resorted to by individuals who suffer from UTIs.

This amazing formula has added dandelion and cranberry extracts and is made carefully in an FDA-inspected facility in the U.S (https://www.amazon.com/D-Mannose-600mg-Cranberry-Dandelion-Extract/dp/B01LX5KGF0).
