(Newswire.net — September 28, 2021) —

Ducci Electrical Contractors performed all major electrical work for a recently completed major medical center expansion, the largest construction project ever in Poughkeepsie, New York.

The Vassar Brothers Medical Center, which opened in 2021, provides vital routine and emergency care for patients in the Hudson Valley. For Farmington, Conn.-based Ducci Electrical Contractors, it was another example of the company’s major work on complex and aggressively-paced construction projects throughout the region.

Massive Medical Project

The medical center is eight floors and totals 752,000 square feet. A new trauma center and emergency department opened on January 9, 2021, with the new patient pavilion opening two days later.

As part of Nuvance Health, the completed project adds 15 operating rooms, 264 private patient rooms, a 66-bay emergency unit, and a 30-bed intensive care unit to the existing facility. Across all trades, the project price was $545 million.

Ducci Electrical Contractors was responsible for the full array of electrical installations, including normal power distribution, emergency power, temporary power, complete lighting, security, audio-visual, fire alarm, life safety, paging, nurse call, closed-circuit television, and data systems.

Additionally, Ducci Electrical was responsible not just for the work on the new facility but also for integrating all power and life safety systems with those of the existing hospital, all without interrupting patient care. This work was not only incredibly detailed but required a high degree of safety-conscious coordination, especially for high-voltage power distribution and fire alarm systems, to ensure continuous power and life safety system operations for the existing facility.

Excellence and Safety Top of Mind

At the peak of its work, Ducci Electrical had a crew of more than 100 electricians working on the project while maintaining a high quality of workmanship and impeccable safety record.

The four-year project was massive in scope. Over its length, workers installed about 3.45 million linear feet of cable, 775,500 linear feet of conduit, 700 tons of ductwork, 13,000 light fixtures, 4,400 tons of steel, 103,000 square feet of glass, and 30,000 cubic yards of concrete.

The new patient pavilion is expected to be LEED-certified. The project was designed and built using several environmentally friendly methods and materials. For example, energy recovery solutions, efficient insulation, and LED lights are expected to reduce energy demand by 20 percent. Glazing was used to reduce solar gain and with low reflection rates to reduce bird collisions. Lower-level roofs include plantings to connect to the environment and retain rainwater runoff.

Other environmentally conscious measures include fixtures with auto-off controls and low-flow faucets expected to reduce water use by about 20,000 gallons per day. There are also preferred parking spaces and charging stations in the underground garage for use with hybrid and electric vehicles.

For Ducci Electrical Contractors, this is just the latest among a long resume of major large-scale construction projects in the healthcare industry in recent years, including:

  • St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center John O’Connell Tower. A $14.8 million project to add 318,000 square feet, including 102 private rooms, an emergency department, and surgical space.
  • The Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven Health. Ducci Electrical completed work on a $33.9 million contract for a 500,000-square-foot, 14-story building.
  • John Dempsey Hospital at UCONN Medical Center. Ducci conducted all electrical work for the 12-story, 422,000-square-foot inpatient hospital with a 37-room emergency department, 11 operating rooms, and 162 patient beds.
