Research Now Finds a Link Between Coffee and Reduced Body Fat in Women

A study was carried out and published in The Journal of Nutrition.

In this research, it has been found that coffee has anti-obesity agents. More particularly, women who consumed two or three cups of coffee a day had reduced lower total body and abdominal fat than those who drink less.

The investigators in this research examined data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which is organized by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in the United States. 

They looked into the link between consumption of cups of coffee per day and both total body fat percentage and abdominal or ‘trunk’ fat (adiposity).

The study findings particularly pointed out that women belonging to the age bracket of between 20 and 44 who drank two or three cups of coffee a day had the lowest levels of adiposity, 3.4 percent lower than people who did not consume coffee. 

Further among women aged between 45 and 69 years, it has been found that those who consumed four or more cups had an adiposity percentage of 4.1 percent lower.

Overall, the average total body fat percentage was 2.8 percent lower among women of all ages who consumed two or three cups of coffee a day.

On a global scale, about 7 million tons of coffee are consumed every year. 

According to Dr. Lee Smith, their research suggests that there may be bioactive compounds in coffee other than caffeine that regulate weight and which could potentially be used as anti-obesity compounds. 

Dr. Lee Smith is a Reader in Public Health at Anglia Ruskin University and senior author of the study.
