Research Shows Compounds in Cranberries Have Antibacterial Potentials

(Newswire.net — November 11, 2021) Orlando, FL — Cranberries are some of the most popular and nutritious foods that experts strongly recommend intake of. Cranberry juice, in particular, is widely consumed due to its UTI-fighting benefits.

Researchers at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) carried out a study and found that compounds in cranberries altered E.coli bacteria.

In previous research studies, it’s been shown that E.coli is responsible for about 90 percent of all urinary tract infections (UTIs).

It was carried out by Terri Camesano, associate professor of chemical engineering at WPI, and a team including graduate students Yatao Liu and Paola Pinzon-Arango.

It was the first time research started to reveal the biochemical and biophysical mechanisms that seem to underlie the numerous beneficial health effects that have long been ascribed to cranberries and cranberry juice–in particular, its ability to prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs).

Over the years, scientists suggest that the juice contains compounds that prevent bacteria from latching onto the cells lining the urinary tract that could otherwise lead to an infection.

The researchers utilized the atomic force microscope and some other sophisticated tools in studying how a certain group of tannins (called proanthocyanidins or PACs) in cranberries interact with bacteria at the molecular level.

They have found that cranberry juice produced chemical changes that create an energy barrier halting bacteria from getting close to the urinary tract lining. Further, there was a significant decrease in the adhesive forces between E. coli and cells of the urinary tract in the presence of at least a 5 percent solution of cranberry juice cocktail.

It is also important to stress that cranberry juice was able to compress the fimbriae on the surface of the type of E. coli bacteria. This lessened the ability of the bacteria to latch onto the cells lining the urinary tract.

More and more people actually resort to all-natural remedies like cranberry in battling UTIs. It is important to note that today, this therapeutic ingredient is obtained through supplementation.

One of the extra-strength formulas that consumers resort to nowadays is Divine Bounty D-mannose, which is known for its high potency and purity.  This amazing supplement could be extremely beneficial for individuals who don’t want to use antibiotics but increase their protection against the infection.
