A New Study Reveals Mediterranean Diet Deters Overeating

A study was carried out and published in the Obesity journal. 

In this research, it has been found that nonhuman primates on a Mediterranean diet chose not to consume all the food available to them, and were able to maintain a normal weight.

This research was carried out by scientists at Wake Forest School of Medicine.

According to Carol A. Shively, Ph.D., by comparison, the animals on a Western diet ate far more than they needed and gained weight.

Shively is the study’s principal investigator, professor of pathology at Wake Forest School of Medicine.

It is worth noting that this is the first preclinical trial to measure the impacts of long-term intake of a Western versus Mediterranean diet on obesity-related ailments under controlled experimental conditions.

In previous research studies, investigators were able to see that the impacts of diet type on caloric intake were largely based on human population studies. It is important to stress these studies depended on self-reported food consumption, which is often unreliable, or rodent studies with nonhuman-type diets.

This Wake Forest School of Medicine study was a 38-month (equivalent to about 9 years for humans) prevention trial. 

The diets were designed to closely reflect human diets with fat and protein derived largely from animal sources in the Western diet, as well as primarily from plant sources in the Mediterranean diet. 

However, experts stress that the two diets were comparable proportions of fat, protein, and carbohydrates. 

“What we found was that the group on the Mediterranean diet actually ate fewer calories, had lower body weight, and had less body fat than those on the Western diet,” Shively said.
