Research Highlights Brain Health Impacts of a Mediterranean Diet

(Newswire.net — January 24, 2022) Orlando, FL — Researchers have been carrying out studies to look into the health impacts of certain eating patterns, such as the Mediterranean diet.

A study has shown that such a diet may actually be protective against memory loss and dementia.

In cases of Alzheimer’s disease, there are deaths in the neurons of the brain and they are due to certain protein deposits in the brains of affected individuals. There are these co-called beta-amyloid proteins, which form clumps (plaques) between neurons.

There are also tau proteins, which stick together the inside of neurons. While it has not been known yet what causes these deposits, it is observed that affected persons have rapidly progressive atrophy, i.e. a shrinking of the brain volume.

Scientists at the DZNE led by Prof. Michael Wagner, head of a research group at the DZNE and senior psychologist at the memory clinic of the University Hospital Bonn carried out the study.

They have particularly found that a regular Mediterranean-like dietary pattern with relatively more consumption of vegetables, legumes, fruit, cereals, fish, and monounsaturated fatty acids, such as olive oil, may be protective against protein deposits in the brain and brain atrophy.

Further, this diet has a low intake of dairy products, red meat, as well as saturated fatty acids.

There were a total of 512 subjects with about seventy years of an average age who took part in the research. It is worth keeping in mind that 169 of them were healthy cognitively, and 343 were identified as having an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

They were categorized as such due to subjective memory impairment, a mild cognitive impairment that is the precursor to dementia. They may also have a first-degree relationship with patients diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

Following the Mediterranean diet can mean getting more of the nutrients helpful for brain health and protection. It is worth keeping in mind that many vitamins and minerals are found particularly beneficial for the mind.

These include B vitamins that can be found in the food and beverages contained in the Mediterranean diet. Over the years, B vitamins have been studied due to their strong medicinal benefits.

According to researchers, B vitamins could be protective of brain health. What makes them even more beneficial is that they may also work in enhancing immunity.

Today, they are obtained widely through the use of extra-strength formulas like Divine Bounty B Vitamin Complex. This supplement is loaded with the healing goodness of all B vitamins, namely Choline, Pantothenic acid, Biotin, Vitamin B12, Folic Acid, Niacin, Riboflavin, Thiamin, and vitamin B6 (www.amazon.com/dp/B07414752B).
