A Study Highlights Link Between Severe COVID-19 and Short Telomeres

(Newswire.net — February 9, 2022) Orlando, FL — Covid-19 continues to wreak havoc on the life and health of billions of people around the globe. The scientific community continues to study this disease and how it affects the various aspects of health including the lungs. 

A study was carried out by the researchers at the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO) in collaboration with the COVID-IFEMA Field Hospital.

Its findings were published in the Aging journal. 

The findings have shown that patients with severe Covid-19 disease have telomeres that are significantly shorter. 

It was spearheaded by Maria A. Blasco and whose first authors are Raúl Sánchez and Ana Guío-Carrión, postulates. 

It is worth noting that the shortening of the telomeres stems from the viral infection impeding the generation of tissue. According to experts, this is why a significant number of patients suffer prolonged sequelae.

Blasco, who is from The Telomeres and Telomerase Group, believes this treatment could be useful in those with lung lesions left by Covid-19. It is important to mention she was already developing a therapy in regenerating lung tissue in pulmonary fibrosis patients.

For decades, Blasco and her team had been studying the role telomeres play in the regeneration of tissue. Experts say that telomeres pertain to structures protecting the chromosomes within each cell of the organism. 

Further, it is important to stress that telomere length is actually an indicator of aging. Throughout life, there is a constant cell division in the regeneration of tissues. When they stop doing so due to the telomeres being too short, the body ages. 

“These findings demonstrate that molecular hallmarks of aging, such as the presence of short telomeres, can influence the severity of COVID-19 pathologies,” the investigators said.

The study was funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, the National Institute of Health Carlos III, the Community of Madrid, the Botín Foundation, and Banco Santander through Santander Universidades, and World Cancer Research.
