Study Finds Disturbed Sleep Associated With Mental Health Issues

(Newswire.net — February 18, 2022) Orlando, FL — Lack of sleep results in more than just disrupted functioning at home and work. In multiple research studies, it has been found that sleep deprivation could result in various undesirable health consequences.

A study has shown that sleep disturbances are linked with mental health issues. The study involved survivors of natural disasters in 2010, particularly the earthquake in Haiti. The mental health effects were observed even after two years of the occurrence of the event. 

The study findings have shown that 94 percent of the subjects experienced subsequent insomnia symptoms after the disaster. Further, it has been found 42 percent exhibited clinically significant levels of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). 

Further, the researchers found that almost 22 percent suffered from depression symptoms. 

According to lead author and principal investigator Judite Blanc, Ph.D., this is one of the first epidemiological studies to investigate the prevalence of sleep disturbances among survivors of the 2010 Haiti earthquake. 

Blanc is an NIH T32 postdoctoral fellow in the Center for Healthful Behavior Change within the Division of Health and Behavior in the Department of Population Health at NYU School of Medicine.  

“Our study underscores the strong association between common trauma-related disorders and comorbid sleep conditions among a group of survivors,” Blanc adds. 

The investigators recommend the need to evaluate and treat sleep issues among individuals who survived a natural disaster. Sleep health is vital, and this is why more and more researchers are carrying out studies to look into the best possible ways to aid in enhancing sleep quality and quantity.
