(Newswire.net — April 15, 2022) Orlando, FL — Severe illness and death are what most people fear from Covid-19. It is worth keeping in mind that the pandemic has also been found to wreak havoc on mental health.

Scientists from Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health carried out a study.

This research has shown that since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, the prevalence of both anxiety and depression increased exponentially on a global scale.

The findings of this study were published in Psychological Medicine.

It is worth keeping in mind that this research has shown the impacts of implementing mitigation strategies, such as stay-at-home orders and public transportation and school closures on the disorders.

“Our research found an elevated global prevalence of these mental health issues during COVID-19 and also revealed there was a wide variance in each at the region- and country-level,” said, João Castaldelli-Maia, MD, Ph.D.

Castaldelli-Maia is a NIDA-INVEST Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Epidemiology and lead author.

In comparison to other areas of the world, Asia has been found to have reduced rates of depression and anxiety. In Europe, there was an increase in anxiety levels due to the closure of public transportation.

It included 60 studies involving a total of 226,638 people evaluated by the researchers. During the pandemic, the global rates of depression and anxiety increased by 24 percent and 21 percent respectively.

“Our study confirms how critical it is to investigate levels of mental health disorders and the possible impacts of social distancing measures on mental health outcomes,” said Silvia Martins, MD, Ph.D.

Martins is the senior author of the study and associate professor of epidemiology at Columbia Mailman School.

“Mental health concerns should not be viewed only as a delayed consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic, but also as a concurrent epidemic,” she added.

More studies are still trying to see the impacts of the pandemic on mental health issues. It is always best to resort to measures found particularly helpful in warding off depression and anxiety.

Some studies have shown that certain nutrients like B vitamins may behave anti-anxiety and antidepressant benefits. These nutrients are vital for certain bodily processes and their deficiencies are even linked with certain symptoms.
