Research Reveals How E.coli Strain Obtained Deadly Powers

(Newswire.net — May 12, 2022) Orlando, FL — Scientists continue to carry out studies investigating the dangerous effects of E.coli, which is responsible for 90 percent of all urinary tract infection (UTI) cases.

A study has revealed how the E.coli strain acquired its deadly powers. This gene study has particularly shown that the E.coli strain turned out to be a potentially life-threatening infection in the United Kingdom around 30 years ago.  

Such a discovery aids in explaining outbreaks of severe food poisoning that started in the 1980s. The investigators say that their findings demonstrate that E.coli O157 continues to evolve and should be monitored closely. 

According to the investigators, most strains of E.coli are harmless and live in the gut without causing problems. E.coli O157, on the other hand, can produce certain molecules called Shiga-toxins, which are associated with more serious human infections.

It is worth noting that the strains found to be responsible for most serious ailments in individuals living in the UK produce two types of Shiga-toxin — stx1 and stx2a.

The team of researchers who carried out this study included scientists at Public Health England and the University of Edinburgh.

They decoded the genetic sequences of over a thousand samples of E.coli O17 gathered from human infections and animals over the past 30 years. Their analysis has shown that the ancestor of E. coli O157 has been around for more than 175 years.

The study is published in the Microbiology Society’s journal Microbial Genomics.

“Thankfully, dangerous E. coli outbreaks remain relatively rare. Our research underlines the need to study the genetic code of strains that cause infections in humans and those present in farmed animals,” Professor David Gally, of the University of Edinburgh’s Roslin Institute, said.

“Good hygiene practices — both with food and when out enjoying the countryside — can help to minimize the risk of these and other severe infections. Our work endeavors to understand how these toxic strains persist in cattle and the best ways to prevent them from spreading to us.”
