Study Finds Anxiety and Depression Patients Use More Alcohol

(Newswire.net — May 13, 2022) Orlando, FL — Anxiety and depression rates have been found to increase since the start of the pandemic. It is worth realizing that the pandemic appears to worsen the condition and behavioral patterns of those struggling with these mental health issues.

A study was carried out by researchers at NYU School of Global Public Health and published in the journal Preventive Medicine.

In this research, it has been found that individuals with anxiety and depression tended to report an increase in alcohol intake during the COVID-19 pandemic than those without mental health issues. In a majority of young people, it has been found that drinking actually grew.

However, it is also worth noting that there was a keen increase in the odds of harmful alcohol use among older adults suffering from anxiety and depression.

According to Ariadna Capasso,  this increase in drinking, particularly among people with anxiety and depression, is consistent with concerns that the pandemic may be triggering an epidemic of problematic alcohol use.

Capasso is a doctoral student at NYU School of Global Public Health and the study’s lead author.

People usually drink to cope with stress and traumatic events. It is worth noting that in 2002, it has been found there was an increase in alcohol consumption following the September 11 terrorist attacks among a quarter of New Yorkers.

The researchers offer support to the increased mental health and substance use services during this global health crisis.

According to Ralph DiClemente, lessons we’ve learned from previous disasters show us that intervening early for unhealthy substance use is critical and could help lessen the pandemic’s impact on mental health.

DiClemente is chair of the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at NYU School of Global Public Health and the study’s senior author.

Today, an increasing number of studies have been highlighting the effects of using some plant-based remedies to help maintain mental health. These include the use of formulas like VitaBreeze Curcumin.

In various research studies, curcumin has long been found to work wonders in delivering antioxidant and inflammation-fighting benefits. Scientists further suggest its intake may be helpful in fighting anxiety and depression.

VitaBreeze Curcumin is widely resorted to due to the fact that it is highly potent and pure. It also has black pepper that works in increasing curcumin absorption inside the body. It is made carefully in an FDA-inspected facility in the U.S. and it continues to be a popular choice among health-conscious and budget-wise consumers. (http://amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-Pepper-Extract/dp/B00JA4TLTI/)
