Study Now Found Link Between Severe Hot Flashes and Sleep Apnea

(Newswire.net — May 20, 2022) Orlando, FL — Various research studies have been carried out in the past to look into the different aspects of menopause. These include its symptoms and how it is potentially linked with other health issues.

A study was carried out and published in Menopause, the journal of The North American Menopause Society (NAMS).

In this research, it has been found that severe hot flashes may be linked with an increased risk of obstructive sleep apnea. 

It is worth noting that a number of menopausal women report having poor sleep. Up to 80 percent of midlife women also experience symptoms like night sweats or hot flashes. 

While there is a known link between hot flashes and sleep issues in midlife women, it has become quite difficult to distinguish sleep disturbances directly connected to menopause from those because by OSA and other sleep disorders. 

Obstructive sleep apnea is found to be more common in men than women. In women, it is more likely to develop when they age, gain weight, and reach perimenopause and postmenopause status. 

In a sampling of perimenopausal and postmenopausal women who experienced disturbed sleep, it has been found that 53 percent had a sleep disorder such as OSA, restless leg syndrome, or both. 

It is worth noting that OSA diagnosis in women can be more challenging and this is due to the fact that their symptoms are different from the obvious ones men suffer from. These particularly include loud snoring. 

Symptoms in women include insomnia, headaches, fatigue, depression, and anxiety.  

“Sleep disruption is a common complaint at menopause. It is important to recognize the high number of undiagnosed sleep disorders, including OSA,” says Dr. JoAnn Pinkerton, NAMS executive director. 

“Early morning headaches or excessive daytime sleepiness should raise concern for OSA and signal a possible need for sleep apnea testing,” she added.
