Research Reveals How Supercomputers Outwit Antibiotic Resistance

This research was carried out by an international team spearheaded by Dr. Gerhard Koenig from the University of Portsmouth.

The findings of this interesting study were published in PNAS. 

For decades, computers have been utilized in drug design. However, this study is the first to use a 

multi-pronged computer-guided strategy in making a new antibiotic from an existing one that bacteria have outwitted.

“Antibiotics are one of the pillars of modern medicine and antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest threats to human health. There’s an urgent need to develop new ways of fighting ever-evolving bacteria,” Dr. Koenig, a computational chemist and first author of the paper, said.

“Developing a new antibiotic usually involves finding a new target that is essential for the survival of a wide range of different bacteria. This is extremely difficult, and only very few new classes of antibiotics have been developed in recent times.”

It is vital to resort to the measures found to be particularly helpful in reducing the risk of antibiotic resistance.
