Physical Activity Continues To Be Beneficial for Chronic Pain

The investigators performed a series of experiments involving 51 healthy adults belonging to the age bracket between 60 and 77 years old. 

It is worth noting that everyone wore an activity monitor device for a week to measure their level of physical activity. Part of the study was to have them undergo two tests of pain modulation — functions affecting the way pain is interpreted and perceived by the central nervous system.

The test that measured the production of pain responses to repeated pain stimuli is called temporal summation. The other test, which is called conditioned pain modulation, evaluated the decrease in pain responses to competing pain stimuli. 

Both tests have shown a significant link in between pain modulation and daily physical activity level. Further, older adults with more frequent moderate-to-vigorous physical activity had reduced pain scores on the temporal summation test.

This, according to the researchers, indicate less pain facilitation.
