(Newswire.net — June 14, 2022) Orlando, FL — In the United States, statistics reveal that stroke is the top 5th cause of death. The good news is that in new research, it appears that its rates among senior Americans tend to spiral down.

According to Dr. Marc Gordon, senior study author, they found that stroke incidence [among those 65 and older] has been declining for the last 20 years.

Dr. Coresh is a professor of epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, in Baltimore.

“Our study found that the decrease is happening in whites and blacks, which is very important because blacks are at an elevated risk of stroke,” he added.

The findings are published in the July 16 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

It is further worth noting that the death rate of stroke for individuals aged 65 and under remains steady.

According to Dr. Ralph Sacco, the more concerning news is the lack of decline [in stroke rates] among those under 65.

Dr. Sacco is chairman of neurology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

“On the other hand, stroke rates likely are declining in older people due to improved treatment of risk factors for stroke,” Coresh said.

It is worth noting that stroke is highly preventable through practicing healthy dietary and lifestyle habits. Experts have long been pointing out the importance of taking these preventive measures to ward off stroke.

In multiple research studies, it has been found that a therapeutic agent found in red wine called resveratrol may help. More particularly, it has been found to protect the brain from stroke damage.

Scientists at Johns Hopkins even suggest that consumption of red wine does produce benefits for brain protection following a stroke.

This research involved mice induced with ischemic stroke, which was done by cutting off the blood supply to the brains of the animals. It has been found that those treated with resveratrol had significantly less brain damage than the untreated subjects.

According to Sylvain Doré, Ph.D., resveratrol has the ability to increase the levels of a certain enzyme called heme oxygenase.

It is worth mentioning that this enzyme has been known to offer protection to the nerve cells in the brain against damage.

Doré is an associate professor of anesthesiology and critical care medicine and pharmacology and molecular sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

There are many other mechanisms resveratrol has been found to deliver disease-fighting benefits. Today, it is widely consumed via supplementation such as the use of Divine Bounty Resveratrol (https://www.amazon.com/Resveratrol-Supplement-Strength-Extract-capsules/dp/B019C0UU5S).
