Research Reveals Cannabis Compound May Combat Resistant Bacteria

(Newswire.net — September 15, 2022) Orlando, FL — Over the years, researchers have been releasing warnings against antibiotic resistance. There have been studies carried out to look into the remedies potentially helpful in reducing its prevalence.

Research has shown a cannabis compound may work wonders in fighting resistant bacteria. This helper compound is called cannabidiol (CBD), which is a cannabinoid from the cannabis plant.

This study was carried out by a research team from the University of Southern Denmark, and its findings were published in the Scientific Reports journal.

It was carried out by Janne Kudsk Klitgaard, who is Principal Investigator and corresponding author. First author is PhD student Claes Søndergaard Wassmann.

When CBD was combined with antibiotics, the researchers witnessed a more powerful effect than when they used antibiotics alone as a treatment. So to kill a certain number of bacteria, they needed fewer antibiotics.

In this research, CBD was actually used to enhance the impact of the antibiotic bacitracin against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, which is a major human pathogen that often causes community- and hospital-acquired disease.

It is worth noting that multidrug-resistant clones of this pathogen have been found to be spreading globally. In certain countries, treatment of bacterial infections with these resistant bacteria is challenging and such a problem is expected to be an ever-larger problem in the future.

The researchers found that when bacteria were treated with the combination, they could no longer replicate as they normally do. There was also a reduction in the expression of certain key genes in the bacteria, and the bacterial membrane became unstable.

“If we combine an antibiotic with a helper compound, that enhances the effect of the antibiotic, we need less antibiotic to achieve the same effect. This may contribute to the development of fewer resistant bacteria,” says Janne Kudsk Klitgaard.

Experts have long warned against the overuse of antibiotics, which is considered to be the main cause of antibiotic resistance.

Over the years, researchers have been carrying out studies to investigate the techniques potentially helpful against antibiotic resistance.

Experts say that lessening the risk of UTIs, which are normally treated with antibiotics, may be helpful. It is worth noting that the increasing prevalence of the infection fuels the skyrocketing demand and use of antibiotics, which are often misused.

In warding off UTIs, it may be helpful to take into account the use of an all-natural UTI-fighting remedy called Divine Bounty D-mannose. This unique formula is also equipped with other UTI-fighting extracts like cranberry and dandelion (www.amazon.com/D-Mannose-600mg-Cranberry-Dandelion-Extract/dp/B01LX5KGF0).
