A Study Shows an Antioxidant May Help Combat Antibiotic Resistance

(Newswire.net — September 19, 2022) Orlando, FL — Health authorities have long been warning against the dangers of antibiotic resistance, which is one of the rapidly growing global health issues today.

A study has shown that an antioxidant found in green tea may actually help combat antibiotic resistance.

This research carried out by scientists at the University of Surrey was published in the Journal of Medical Microbiology.

The findings have shown that epigallocatechin (EGCG), which is found in green tea, can restore the activity of the antibiotic called aztreonam, which is commonly used to treat infections that develop due to the bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

In assessing the synergy of EGCG and aztreonam, the investigators conducted tests in vitro to look into the manner in which they interacted with P. aeruginosa, individually and in combination.

It has been particularly found that the aztreonam-EGCG combination was significantly more effective at dropping P. aeruginosa numbers than either agent alone. The investigators believe that in P. aeruginosa, EGCG may facilitate increased uptake of aztreonam.

It was believed to be done by increasing permeability in the bacteria.

“The World Health Organisation has listed antibiotic-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa as a critical threat to human health. We have shown that we can successfully eliminate such threats with the use of natural products, in combination with antibiotics already in use,” said Professor Roberto La Ragione.

La Ragione is Head of the Department of Pathology and Infectious Diseases in the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Surrey.

“Further development of these alternatives to antibiotics may allow them to be used in clinical settings in the future.”

Today, scientists are increasingly looking into the best techniques to lessen the prevalence of antibiotic resistance. Lessening the need to use antibiotics, which are widely misused, is vital in doing this.

Antibiotic misuse, especially in the treatment of urinary tract infections, is quite common. It can be significantly helpful to reduce the risk of UTIs to eliminate the need for antibiotics.

One of the best UTI-preventive remedies is D-mannose, which is a therapeutic found that can be found in cranberry. It is widely resorted to nowadays through the use of supplements like Divine Bounty D-mannose.

Unlike inferior brands, this formula is made carefully in an FDA-inspected facility in the U.S. It continues to be one of the best choices due to its high potency and purity. It could be an excellent choice for individuals who are trying to lessen their risk of UTIs (amazon.com/D-Mannose-600mg-Cranberry-Dandelion-Extract/dp/B01LX5KGF0).
