Growing Evidence Highlights the Liver Health Benefits of Probiotics

(Newswire.net — October 3, 2022) Orlando, FL — Over the years, various research studies have highlighted the relevance of ensuring adequate levels of probiotics inside the body. These beneficial bacteria have long been found to produce disease-fighting benefits, and may be protective of the various organs inside the body.

A study was carried out and was presented at the American Society for Investigative Pathology annual meeting during the 2018 Experimental Biology meeting.

In this research involving mouse subjects, it has been found that a probiotic treatment was protective against liver damage caused by acetaminophen.

According to Bejan Saeedi, a doctoral candidate at Emory University who conducted the research, probiotics have been studied most intensely in the context of the gastrointestinal tract.

“This study provides evidence that the effects of probiotics extend beyond the gastrointestinal tract. What makes this study unique is that it suggests a discreet molecular mechanism by which these effects are elicited,” he added.

Saeedi and his colleagues specifically looked into the probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (known as LGG), a species common in many over-the-counter probiotic formulations.

They treated mice food laced with LGG for two weeks and then assessed how the subjects responded to a high dose of acetaminophen.

It is important to keep in mind that excessive intake of this pharmaceutical drug leads in serious liver damage and even death. This is due to the fact that it increases  the levels of a form of oxygen called free radicals, a process known as oxidative stress.

“Administration of the probiotic LGG to mice improves the antioxidant response of the liver, protecting it from oxidative damage produced by drugs such as acetaminophen,” explained Saeedi.

It is worth noting that the liver is a hub for the removal of toxins from the blood. It also plays a significant role in the body’s processes for the conversion of food into energy.
