(Newswire.net — October 4, 2022) Orlando, FL — Today, an increasing number of studies highlight the link between various prevalent conditions, such as depression and obesity. Some researchers suggest that these health issues may also have something to do with sleepiness.

This is demonstrated in a study carried out by the Penn State College of Medicine researchers.

The investigators found that it is not only lack of sleep, but also depression and obesity that are the underlying causes of regular drowsiness. The findings may pave the way for the development of more personalized sleep medicine for those struggling with excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS).

According to statistics, as much as 30 percent of the general population experiences EDS. It pertains to daytime drowsiness or sleepiness happening most of the day, and this can include irresistible sleep attacks.

Further, feeling overly exhausted during the day can lessen job productivity as well as increase errors and absenteeism. It may even result in more serious issues like car crashes.

Previous studies have linked EDS with depression, sleep apnea, and obesity. However, this new research is the first to utilize physiologic sleep data in inferring causation and investigating mechanisms.

The investigators measured self-reporting of EDS at baseline in 1,395 men and women and again at an average of 7.5 years later.

The participants of this study completed a comprehensive sleep history and physical examination and were assessed for one night in a sleep laboratory. Some other factors were also recorded, such as physical and mental health issues, sleep, and substance use.

The investigators further tried to determine whether the subjects were being treated for physical and mental health conditions.

According to Julio Fernandez-Mendoza, obesity and weight gain predicted who was going to have daytime sleepiness.

Fernandez-Mendoza is an assistant professor of psychiatry at the Sleep Research and Treatment Center at Penn State College of Medicine.

“Moreover, weight loss predicted who was going to stop experiencing daytime sleepiness, reinforcing the causal relationship,” he added.

The findings of this interesting study were published in the journal called SLEEP.

Today, more and more experts are stressing the relevance of getting adequate sleep. It is important to keep in mind that sleep deprivation is associated with increased odds of certain diseases.

There are plant-based, widely-studied remedies like the use of curcumin that may be helpful. It is important to note that this remedy has many disease-fighting effects. Some studies also show it could work wonders in enhancing sleep quality and quantity.

It may be obtained through the use of highly potent and pure formulas like Divine Bounty Curcumin (http://www.amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-BioPerine-Pepper-Extract/dp/B00VSVKJ8I).
