A Japanese Study Shows Diet Loaded With B Vitamins Reduces Risk of Heart Health Issues

According to Hiroyasu Iso, M.D., professor of public health at Osaka University, Japanese people need more dietary intake of folate and vitamin B-6, which may lead to the prevention of heart disease.

In Japan, dietary intake of vitamin B-6 is generally lower compared to that of the United States. 

The investigators in this research actually analyzed data from 23,119 men and 35,611 women belonging to the age bracket between 40 and 79 years. The subjects completed food frequency questionnaires as part of the large Japan Collaborative Cohort (JACC) Study. 

During a median of 14 years of follow-up, it has been found that 986 died from a stroke, 424 from heart disease, and 2,087 from all medical conditions related to the cardiovascular system.

It is further important to note that investigators actually divided subjects into five groups based on their intake of vitamin B-6, folate, and vitamin B12. They compared diets having the highest and lowest levels of each nutrient.

It has been found that increased intake of vitamin B6 and folate was linked with fewer deaths from heart failure in men. In women, there were significantly fewer deaths from stroke, heart disease, and total cardiovascular diseases.
