Research Highlights a New Material That Eliminates Air Pollutants

The research team was spearheaded by Anil K. Sinha at the Toyota Central R&D Labs.

They carried out tests with acetaldehyde, toluene, and hexane, which are three major components of organic air pollution that play a role indoors as well as out. It is worth noting that all three were extremely effectively eliminated from the air and degraded by the catalyst—significantly better than with conventional catalyst systems.

According to the researchers, one secret to the success of this material is the extremely large inner surface area of the porous manganese oxide. It is found to be higher than all previously known manganese oxide compounds.
