Researchers Reveal How Comorbidities Increase Risk in COVID-19

(Newswire.net — October 24, 2022) Orlando, FL — Covid-19 continues to claim lives around the world. More and more researchers are looking into various aspects of Covid-19 and the risks linked with it.

Scientists from the University of East Anglia (UEA) and the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) carried out a study.

In this research, it has been found that certain comorbidities lead to increased odds of death from Covid-19. These comorbidities include respiratory disease, heart disease, renal disease, obesity, increasing age, and cancer.

In the early phases of the pandemic, researchers found a link in between certain medications for high blood pressure and worse outcomes for Covid-19 patients. However, previous research negated this and revealed that hypertension medications could enhance Covid-19 survival rates and reduce the severity of infection.

This new study has further shown that it is comorbidities that result in increased mortality and disease severity. Aside from having comorbidities, such a risk may also stem from having more than one disease or chronic condition at the same time.

The research team reviewed 52 separate studies that involved more than 100,000 patients in this, the most comprehensive study of its kind to date. They looked into the outcomes for patients under the treatment of antihypertensives.

Such a meta-analysis has shown a significantly reduced risk of hospitalization or death for individuals taking blood pressure medications Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme inhibitors (ACEi) or Angiotensin Receptor Blockers (ARB).

“What a meta-analysis gives us is the really big picture. We looked at the combined findings of 52 separate studies involving over 100,000 patients. It is the most comprehensive study of its kind to date,” said Lead researcher Dr. Vassilios Vassiliou, from UEA’s Norwich Medical School and Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at NNUH.

More studies are still underway to learn about the various aspects of Covid-19. However, experts continue to stress the relevance of taking some measures helpful in increasing protection against the potentially deadly impacts of this virus.

Health authorities have time and again said it is vital to maintain a strong immune system. It is worth keeping in mind that in many cases, those with poor immunity are at a heightened risk of getting more Covid-19 complications.

One of the ways to boost the body’s defenses is to properly nourish the body, and this includes ensuring adequate B vitamin levels.

Over the years, researchers have been revealing that some B vitamins work in enhancing overall immune system health. This is why today, experts are increasingly recommending the intake of foods loaded with these nutrients.
