Research Warns How Impulsivity Influences Habits in Young Adults

(Newswire.net — November 21, 2022) Orlando, FL — There are many people who are highly impulsive, and it is actually quite common in the younger population.

A study was carried out and published in Chronobiology International.

In this research, it has been found that young individuals who opt to stay up late are more impulsive compared to their peers who go to bed earlier. This also makes them more likely to consume alcohol and smoke.

It was carried out by researchers from the University of Surrey and Brunel University London.

They looked into how preferring to stay up late and functioning better in the evening or being an evening type is associated with anxiety, impulsivity, and substance use. Young individuals often opt to stay up late and are thought to be at an increased risk of mental health issues and problematic substance use.

To better understand why this happens, the investigators recruited 191 subjects who were 18-25 years old. They were surveyed on their sleeping preferences as well as their sleep quality, impulsivity, and anxiety levels.

They were also asked about the number of cigarettes they smoked and the amount of coffee, alcohol, and other caffeinated drinks they consumed.

The researchers used a lab-based computer test in measuring impulsivity levels. The participants were also asked to indicate the duration of their waiting before receiving a hypothetical cash reward.

Scientists found that the evening types were more impulsive and they preferred small immediate rewards over larger yet delayed ones. They also had higher anxiety levels and reported increased use of caffeine, alcohol, and cigarette than their peers who preferred going to bed earlier.

“Young people who stay up late and claim they function best in the evening are known to have higher alcohol intake, smoke more cigarettes, and are at greater risk of mental health issues. What we have found is that their higher levels of substance use are due to their increased impulsivity levels,” said Dr. Simon Evans, Lecturer in Neuroscience at the University of Surrey.
