Thriving through Flexibility and Adaptation

“The only thing that is constant is change.” Ancient Greek and pre-Socrates philosopher Heraclitus said this back in 500 B.C.E. Despite the passing of millennia, the truth remains as strong today as it did back then.

The way for anybody to thrive in life is to be flexible with intention. This means that you don’t just randomly change paths whenever you feel like it – that will likely get you nowhere. Instead, it means reading the signs life is constantly showing you and choosing the best path forward, even if it means creating your own.

Such was the case with life and health coach Dr. Sas.

Originally from Thailand, Dr. Sas moved to the US a few weeks shy of her 12th birthday, where she experienced massive culture shock. “I was almost completely silent,” Dr. Sas shares when describing her first year adjusting to life in the United States. “I didn’t speak for a whole year with people at school.”

Despite this, Dr. Sas picked herself up and did what she had to do: She translated entire textbooks from English to Thai to learn the language better and get good grades. Though time-consuming, the plan worked, and Dr. Sas began to adapt to using English as her default language.

As the years passed, her life continued to be peppered with instances of the challenge-adaptation-thrive cycle.

Interested in health ever since,  Dr. Sas chose a career in clinical pharmacy which began at Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi, then at Patrick Air Force Base in Florida before retiring from service and setting off her next chapter in the civilian world.

After decades of dispensing medications to patients from all walks of life, Dr. Sas began to get frustrated constantly handing out pills when she knew her patients could fix their problems with lifestyle and diet changes.

She delved deeper into the world of nutrition and immersed herself in the world of personal growth. She learned Reiki, a Japanese form of energy healing, and began offering Reiki sessions to patients. She was also intent on understanding the importance of one’s mindset to their health. And the more she learned, the more she realized this was her true passion – more prevention and less cure.

Finally, she was ready to make another big pivot in her life: it was time to put more focus on “true health” and less on “fixing.” She didn’t want to simply heal people with drugs – she wanted to give them skills and the knowledge to keep themselves healthy on their own.

She also didn’t want to simply make them happy and healthy – she wanted them to thrive. She wanted her patients to feel great and use that feeling of greatness as a jumping board to impact the world.

This was when she immerse her full attention in being a health and life coach.

One circumstance was thrust upon her, while the second she undertook on her own. Whether you willingly choose a change in your life or not, those who thrive in life are those willing to read the signs, be flexible constantly, and keep adapting to new situations and learnings.

Just because you started as a pharmacist doesn’t mean you can not be more than that. Just because you held a particular belief from a young age doesn’t mean you need to stick to it until you are older. Just because you have unhealthy eating habits doesn’t mean you can’t change.

“When I was nine, my mom told me, ‘Remember, you can be anything and do anything,’” Dr. Sas shares. “I believed her and carry that mindset until today.”

This is the same mindset Dr. Sas works to transmit to each of her clients every day: that their past does not define their futures. All they need to do is be willing to change, adapt to a different lifestyle, and believe it is possible.

Regardless of their current status, she works to empower each of her clients to know that they can truly be anything and have anything they want – they can be as healthy as they wish, as successful as they dream, and as happy as they can imagine.

They just have to learn to listen to their bodies, hearts, and spirits and be willing to grow with the flow.
