Modern Technology in Agriculture

Food security is among the most pressing challenges in the current world. Food demand keeps on increasing as the population increases. A considerable percentage of the world’s population is malnourished due to a lack of enough food to help them live a healthy life. This creates the need to come up with more creative ways to enhance agricultural practices to increase food supply. The use of modern technology is one of the ways to deal with the challenges facing the agricultural sector. As we will see in this article, rising production and supply costs, labor shortages, reduced food supply, and changing consumer preferences are some of the problems that we need to solve using modern technology. 

Indoor Vertical Farming

The aim of using modern innovations in agriculture is to increase crop yields, and indoor vertical farming is a technology that makes this possible. It involves growing crops stacked one above the other in a controlled and closed area. It helps to overcome the challenge of lack of farming due to limited land area by allowing a farmer to grow many plants in a small part of the land as compared to traditional farming methods. The method does not need soil for plants to grow, thus making it better for a setup where there is a land limit. 

Whole Plasmid Sequencing (WPS)

Significant changes in the climate and weather conditions have affected crop production. This creates the need to have plants and animals that can withstand these harsh environments. Whole plasmid sequencing is used to develop improved plants that can resist diseases and overcome harsh weather conditions, thus improving yield. WPS assists in identifying unrequired genetic modification and ensures the stability of genetically modified organisms. This technology has helped increase crop yield and enhance food security. 

Firm Automation

Automation is an intelligent farming method involving automating farm practices. This means less labor will be required in performing practices such as land tiling, transplanting, sowing, and harvesting. It makes farms more efficient by automating animal and crop production. Robotics innovation to create seeding, watering, and harvesting robots and autonomous tractors has reduced the number of laborers required on a farm. Although not many farmers have utilized these new technologies, those using them have experienced tremendous changes in work efficiency and production. 

Livestock Farming Technology

Traditionally, agribusiness requires a farmer to run farm ranches, keep livestock records, and supervise workers manually to ensure animals are taken care of well for better production. However, technological innovations have changed animal husbandry agriculture, making it more revolutionized. Farmers can now track every activity within an animal farm, making it easier to manage livestock. Through livestock technology, you can get more production by using sensors to monitor animal activities, including their health and movement, and respond faster if there is any problem. Genomic is another livestock technology used to understand the genetic risks of their herds and know their future profitability. Farmers can strategically select animals and optimize the yields and productivity of herds.

 

In conclusion, agriculture requires innovation more than before, considering the increased need for food supply. Modern agriculture technologies have helped increase farm yields by reducing manual labor increasing productivity and efficiency. You can get high yields even with a small piece of land using indoor vertical farming. Genome sequencing allows farmers to plant improved crops for better production. Additionally, farmers can monitor the activities of their animals and respond quickly, thus reducing the mortality rate and increasing production.Â
