(Newswire.net — July 1, 2013) Jonesboro, AR — Facebook Hashtags have become fertile ground for big brands who are looking to increase engagement and get more attention for their company using the world’s largest social network. Over the last month big brands such as KFC, Porche, and a host of others have been using the hashtags to connect with fans and drive up business using facebook.

Facebook hashtags were introduced in the early part of June 2013. Since then marketers have been searching for ways to use this new feature to drive business and increase engagement with their current customers. Hashtag anchored online contest have quickly become the go to for big brands and smaller businesses are starting to follow suit with the same strategies.

The strategy being used so far involves big brands posting a contest where their followers can win by completing an action and posting online using a specific hashtag so that the brand can go back and track who has posted using the hashtag (aka: a clever tracking device).

Smaller Businesses and marketers have started to follow suit and are using hashtag based contest to grow their brand awareness as well. A clever post at one such marketer’s website involved a video based contest where users were asked to post an inspiring quote on their wall and then the facebook hashtag that the marketer specified. Within a few hours of posting the video online the marketer had over 100 entries into the contest and had people spreading his hashtag all over facebook.

This kind of use of facebook’s hashtag feature is already proving that big brands aren’t the only ones that can do a lot with the new facebook hashtags and it seems that the trend is starting to catch on rapidly across the business world.

Facebook hashtags really started gaining steam with the conclusion of the 2013 NBA Finals, where fans were using them to talk about key moments in the games. Little was being done at that point to use them for marketing. Just one week after the explosion of use of Facebook hashtags by fans of the NBA, marketers were starting to use them to spread brand awareness and increase engagement with their customers. It’s clear this is starting to catch on in a very big way now.

Big brands are really getting comfortable with the new facebook feature but don’t be surprised if you see your favorite local coffee shop running a “# based promotion” soon. It seems as if the Facebook Hashtag feature is starting to dial itself into the marketing world
